How ScoutRenter Works

List yourself, not the apartment. Post a renter card with your budget, move-in date, and why you’re a great tenant — and LA landlords browse the board and reach out to you. We’re the board, not the broker.

List yourself, not the apartment.

Three steps to a verified renter card on the public board — so LA landlords browse and reach out to you directly.

1

Post your renter card

Free · 2 min · No account needed

Fill in your budget, move-in date, neighborhoods you want, and a short pitch on why you're a great tenant. No listing URL, no paperwork — just the renter card that goes on the public board.

2

Your card goes on the LA board

Public · Browsable by landlords

Your renter card lands on the public board at /renters, where LA landlords browse for tenants who fit. Instead of chasing 60-deep inquiry threads, you let the right landlords come to you.

3

Landlords reach out to you

You take it from there

When a landlord likes your card, they contact you directly. ScoutRenter never sits in the middle, never relays back-and-forth offers, doesn't negotiate price, and never takes a referral fee. From there it's you and the landlord.

Verified annual income vs your stated budget. Higher stable income = higher score. We look at ability to pay, not demographic data.

Employment stability and previous landlord references. Long tenure and positive references boost your score.

Introducer, not broker

What ScoutRenter won't do.

The line we won’t cross — by design, not by accident. Crossing it means California broker licensing (DRE), the wrong incentives, and a worse product for tenants.

Negotiate rent on your behalf
Take a referral fee, ever
Sit between you and the landlord
Sell or syndicate your data

FAQ

Common Questions

No. We pass the tenant's stated budget through unchanged. We don't haggle, don't relay back-and-forth offers, and never take a referral fee. Treat us like a mail-merge tool with verification baked in, not a broker. Lowball offers will be rejected — anchor on HUD Fair Market Rent for the neighborhood before you send.

A regular Gmail inquiry looks identical to the 59 other inquiries that landed that day. A verified renter card on the ScoutRenter board signals 'serious tenant' at a glance — budget, move-in date, and verification badges up front. Landlords browse the board and reach out to the renters who fit, so the renter never has to chase a listing.

Yes — forever. No signup fees, no screening fees, no tips. Posting a renter card, the Scam Detector, rent data, and neighborhood guides are all free. Right now everything is free for landlords too — we're in early access.

It won't be per-deal. Charging a referral fee on the lease triggers California broker licensing (DRE) and creates the wrong incentives. When we eventually need revenue, it'll be subscriptions, premium tools, or B2B data — never a cut of your rent and never a fee tied to whether the lease closes.

Those are listing directories where landlords advertise and renters apply to apartments. ScoutRenter flips it: renters list themselves, not the apartment. You post one verified renter card to the public board, and LA landlords browse it and reach out to you. We don't host listings.

Tenant verification is based only on income, employment, ID, and rental history — never demographic inputs. Landlords see accept-or-reject, not a sortable price competition between tenants. Section 8, family status, and disability cannot be used as filters.

Your card shows your budget, move-in date, neighborhoods, occupants, a short pitch, and verification badges — exactly what you choose to put on it. It lives on the public board at /renters where LA landlords browse. We never sell, syndicate, or ad-target your data.

Post one renter card and let LA landlords reach out to you. No account needed. Tenants never pay.
